A Night at the Museum

So when I woke up this morning, I had my whole day planned down to breakfast, lunch and dinner; soul food, Japanese cuisine and Mexican. First, I was to get dressed. trout down Crenshaw to join in on the MLK festivities in Leimert Park and/or Crenshaw & MLK Blvd. Next, I would be off to the Murakami exhibit at the MOCA. Then I would end the day enjoying some authentic Mexican food and a pitcher of Margaritas on Alvara street.

Well, I sort-of kind-of some-how faulted on the getting dressed part by at least 3 hours; now it was lunchtime. So after finally getting myself together and leaving the house, we headed Downtown for the Murakami exhibit at the MOCA. It took us almost an hour and a half to make the fifteen minute drive. There were helicopters all over downtown and the police were rerouting traffic.

Finally, we had it. I had been anticipating this exhibit since October, but Sweetums had been too busy. For the whole month of November, December and most of January… So since he was somewhat in the doghouse, he initiated this visit. So off to the MOCA we went…

Once we entered, the line was super long. I should have foreseen this, since the exhibit encompassed Takashi Murakami’s greatest works from the last 10 year’s. And if you didn’t know, he’s also the guy that designed Kanye’s Graduation cover: So after being in the line for a good 30 minutes, the place went dark. Turns out there was an underground explosion nearby and everyone had to evacuate. This is the only pic I got, besides the outside banner pictured above:I wonder if this balloon would ever make it into the Macy’s parade…

We abandoned our Alvara Street plans. Since it was too close to the MOCA, we didn’t want to risk of the lights being out there also. Plus the easy flow of traffic was going in the opposite direction.

We still wanted to get a little culture, so we made our way to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), with a small stop at Baja Fresh first. It was already dark by the time we made it there. Where did the day go?

This was my first visit to the LACMA. I was able to snap a few pictures of some things that caught my eye. Some exhibits were restricted from pictures though.

First off, here are some bathing suits from the 1940′s.

I like the 3rd suit in the first picture, and the 2nd and 3rd suit in the second picture. I may have to look into some vintage and/or vintage inspired suit. My kinda coverage.

This was my favorite painting:

Everyone in the picture looked so grotesque and their facial features were exaggerated. I loved it. I wish my pictured showed all the details.

This picture had the be the biggest oil painting I’ve ever seen: I couldn’t even get the whole painting in the picture. The other thing that stood out about this painting, was that it was so detailed. You could see every little eyelash. Check out the closeup of the lady’s bangles and ring:This picture also caught my eye: Sorry it’s so dark, but I wasn’t allowed to use flash and this area of the exhibit had horrible lighting. But if you didn’t notice, the girl on the right looks just like me.

OK, so I’ve officially fallen in love with museums, though I will admit that I know little about art. Hopefully next week we’ll see The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas exhibit, which is being shown at the Pacific Design Center. We would give the Murakami exhibit another try, but I think deep down, the ordeal with the underground explosion was a bit of a punishment, for not checking out Emory Douglas on MLK day. We also haven’t been to the Getty, not to mention all the museums in Leimert Park. Stay tuned, I’ll be documenting it all.

Sweetums and I hit the Macy’s Men’s store in the Beverly Center. He found this Calvin Klein coat on sale for $58 from almost $300.

I’m super jealous. Why can’t this coat be on sale for at least $150.00? *sulks*

So, I finally got my Christmas gifts. My Blackberry Pearl had been giving me problems. It wouldn’t scroll left. This wasn’t a huge problem until I tried to log into AIM. Well, in the messenger area on the pearl, the icons are lined up next to each other. The last messenger service I used was Yahoo, which is to the far right, I couldn’t scroll left to get to the AIM icon… Biiiiggggg problem. If you know me, you know I live on my phone. So I had been contemplating getting a new phone for Christmas. After looking at most smartphones, except the ones from Sprint, I hate Sprint, I narrowed my choices down to the Voyager or the iPhone.

The Voyager had one plus, the full keyboard. When my boyfriend tried to type in Lolo’s Cube in the iPhone, it took almost ten minutes, so we disregarded the phone. But the voyager’s monthly charges are just too high. There’s a charge for tv and a charge for music, and all these packages. I’ve never been a Verizon customer, so I’m not familiar.

So I gave the keyboard on the iPhone a go, and I didn’t have a problem with it. I guess it takes a more dainty touch… And you can’t deny the Internet on the iPhone. No other phone compares in that area. I’ve been perusing all these websites and blogs that I couldn’t on my BB Pearl, it’s just lovely. So I am the proud owner of the iPhone. And I have to say that AT&T’s service plans are great.

On to a few of my other gifts. I hit the outlets this week and optimized my Christmas cash. My first purchase were these patent red moccasin loafers for $20.00 from Nine West. I love moccasin loafers for those days where I’m feeling casual. These are really bright, so I might just wear them as an accent piece. I wouldn’t wear them with a red top, but maybe a my black shirt with small red pinstripes and black pants.

Or maybe I might actually trade these for my moms black leathers that she bought the same day. Or maybe I’ll steal them…

They’re way cheaper than the Tory Burch version though.

Remember I was saying that I wanted the Dooney & Burke Logo Lock Satchel.

Well, of course the leather option wasn’t available at the outlet, but they did have the Anniversary Signature version. I grabbed it at the half price of $150 dollars. This lady was following me around the Dooney outlet store. I heard her tell her friend that she was waiting to see if I would put the purse down. I had the last one, and no other colors were available. Can’t say I haven’t done the same thing.

I don’t plan to wear the shoes and bag together. It’s all just too bright. Well, maybe with the classic black and white working girl outfit. Well see…

During the outlet trip, I also hit the Michael Kors store, where I walked away with a pair of jeans and a few tops. Same at the DKNY store. Also bought some cute little casual sneaks from the Vans store.

Welcome to 2008

Hope everyone had a happy holiday. I know I did. So who ate black eyed peas for good luck and greens for good fortune in the new year? My mother made sure that we all had at least a spoonful. She wants us to buy a house this year, so stuffing us with these items is her first effort. Along side making sure our purses aren’t on the ground. She’s like the purse police to me and my sisters. In her eyes, that’s like asking to be in debt…

So who paid a million dollars to get into an overcrowded club that charged another million for drinks. Only to sweat out your hair, and not have any enjoyment behind limp and frezzy tresses, but instead blisters on your feet. Sweetums and I did the same thing we’ve been doing for our last 5 New Year’s together. We stayed at home. We do the countdown, then kiss at midnight. If I’m sleep, which has happened a few years, he wakes me at 11:58, and we have our New Year’s kiss. That’s it. Plus I can just go to the club next weekend and spend the savings on some fly shoes.

So these past week has been fun and full of family, laughter and food: the way a holiday should be. But like me, you probably wish you hadn’t had that second slice of sweet potato pie, or another cupcake from Sprinkles. New Year’s Resolutions

To be a better blogger. Sounds simple enough right? I think I can handle it. I haven’t been putting forth my best efforts for the last few weeks, only because I knew that traffic would be lower because of the holidays. But all and all, I feel that I’ve gotten comfortable with Lolo’s Cube, and I’ll try to dedicate more time to more cohesive posts. My regular blogging days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That’ll probably stay the same, as school is starting today. But if I feel the itch…

BTW, I’m also on vacation this week. Whoo Hoo!!! Three more days off of work.

A few weeks ago HABITUAL BEAUTY tagged me. Big thanks to her. Sorry it took soooo long, I’m such a procrastinator.

I’m so excited. It’s been times where I had to stop myself from excessively talking about me, but in this post I have an excuse: IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE ALL ABOUT ME!!! YAY!

So let’s get to it.

First thing first, a pic of me. Not a probrlem…

Seven facts about Lolo…

1) My biggest accomplishment this year was getting my braces removed.

This pic only shows me with the single bands, but eventually I was fitted with the double-bands, and those horrible removable bands. I welcomed my brace-face status though. I’m a teeth person, so of course I had to make sure mine were 100% satisfactory. I was always the biggest smiler, but always kept my mouth closed in pix. But I let that go…

Here’s my new $3,000.00 smile…

*This picture was taken in my sister’s birthing room two days after my braces were removed and the day before my birthday. Behind my head was the little bed where they check the baby right after the birth. I wasn’t just smiling in this pic, I was laughing. My sister’s contractions were killing her. But I was laughing because I had the audacity to snap about 30 pix of myself, while she was moaning, groaning and screaming. lmao. I mean, I couldn’t help her, plus I don’t think she noticed. She eventually reconsidered her natural birth plan.

And this is the result. Little Lela. She’s the reason why I never want to have a baby and especially view a birth again. But she’s also the reason I might want a child someday. *sigh* Oh, and the smile is dazzling.

2) Speaking of future babies, this is my boyfriend of 5 years… He’s really bright in this pic, but it’s still my favorite of him and my nephew Cooper, who was only one in this pic. I’m his Boobaa and he is my Sweetums. Yes, we really call each other these names… in public… I’m a computer nerd and he’s a computer tech by trade i.e. nerd, though he’s in denial. So, we’re perfect for each other. Don’t believe me, check out our his/her item…Were you expecting a white CL and CLK? Nope, it’s a his/her work station. Though I’m still waiting for the size of my monitor to be adjusted… I never thought much about the station until his friend was over while Sweetums and I were both working and said we had the husband and wife computer tag team thing going. He said we probably sit there and IM and email each other too. Well, sometimes, like when he’s found a link that might be interesting to me. Yeah, and we both carry portable usb key chains and we both had additional laptops, until I sold mine. Mines was specifically for having Internet use in the bedroom. But it was a waste of money, I just use his when I want to blog from bed now.

3) I think I was a nerdy little 14 year old friendless boy with in a past life. Why? Because I love these items…Yep, good ole simulation games. Actually I more than love them. I have flipped and conquerred them. I have all types of codes and what nots pertaining to these games. A whole extra hard drive on my pc for these games. My boyfriend built me a pc with optimum gaming capabilities. Though I’m still waiting for a new monitor. I also own these but have yet to download and/or play…

And I just came across this one and added it to my amazon shopping cart…

Waiting on this one is like waiting on a Maxwell album. *drumming fingers on desk* Yeah, I pre-ordered this last week…Then there’s my PS2 which I love. I bought it for my boyfriend one Christmas along with this baby…

It is painful watching my boyfriend play. Yes, I’m better than him. But how could he not understand run up the wall, flip outward and grab the rope.

I’m contemplating asking for a Wii for xmas, but with school, Lolo’s Cube and work, I just can’t fit it all in my schedule. I thought about getting it for him, but he wants a camcorder. *rolling eyes* That’s what I get for asking him what he wants. I should have just got him what I wanted disguised as a gift for him…

Ohh and last but not least in my nerdy little secrets… I would blog much more often if not for these…

I love those little Internet puzzle and action games. Been a member at King.com for over a year. I love it there. Plus you can win money, but now that I’m at the level of my equals, I just keep my acount and play for free.

4) I attend Santa Monica College. It’s getting harder and harder to continue my education. But I’m sticking in there. If only I would have finished school my first go round. I was 18 and making a whooping $12/hour, who needed school. I couldn’t even pay my primary bills with that money now, but could be living the good life now, if I had finished then. Spilt milk… I’m halfway there and living the alright life in the meantime. If I hadn’t changed majors or dropped so many classes in the beginning of my return, I would be much further ahead. I was so serious about school that I dropped all classes that had lazy or lax teachers. Now I go to ratemyprofessor.com to sift through the non-homework assigning teachers.

5) I love Maxie…

Yes, I named my car. I try to take good care of her. She’s costly though, but worth it. A V6 engine, heated steering wheel, heated memory leather seats, a Bose sound system and a smooth ride. Maxi is a bad B*tch. What else could a girl want? Well actually one of these for the ’08…

Or maybe I’ll just refinance Maxi and get a cheaper payment. We’ll see.

6) I had surgery on my left foot 3 months ago. I had to wear one of those post surgical booties, aka, the robo boot. The boot is about 3 inches high, so people would notice my limp and look down whenever I ore a sneaker or flat. Hoping for a smoother walk, I tried to do the Rihana thing and wear a heel, but it was too high. So I had to do the unthinkable. *sigh* I wore I leprechaun shoe like these…

*avoiding eye contact* Ok, I’m ready for my stoning. They go against my beliefs. I’m anti-leprechaun shoe, but I was handicapped and medicated, so have mercy…

7) Lolo loves to read. I own over 300 books. I started reading Black contemporary lit, then a branched out into other genres. I can go on and on about this, but it’s getting late, so I’ll cut it short. These are my absolute favorite writers. If these people wrote a book titled How to Kill Marleaux in 10 Steps or Less I would be without even reading the description..
